As the largest jersey framing company, SportsDisplays has an interesting perspective on trends and popularity with players, teams and sports. We frame a large number of "personal" projects for customers, which include high school/college jerseys, company uniforms/shirts, golf shirts, military/police uniforms, etc.
However, the large majority of items framed at SportsDisplays are of course sports memorabilia - whether autographed or not. In a data analytics study of popularity, SportsDisplays analyzed customer trends to determine the most popular sports to have framed along with the most popular individuals.
Given the popularity of the NFL and College Football, it should be no surprise that football is the most popular jersey framing. What is surprising is just how popular football jerseys are - nearly 50% of all jersey framing is a football jersey!
Of the "Big Four" sports, baseball jerseys are second most popular, followed by basketball jerseys and then hockey jerseys.
Now, who is the most popular individual to frame? Given the analysis of the overall sports, it's logical to assume the most popular jersey would be a football player. It would also be logical to assume the jersey is a current or recently retired player. If you made those assumptions you would be wrong on both accounts!
The most popular jersey to frame is Michael Jordan! Jordan retired from the NBA over 13 years ago, yet his jersey is clearly number!
The next three most popular framed jerseys are all NFL football players - Peyton Manning, Joe Montana and Tom Brady. Of course Joe Montana over 20 years ago!?!
Most surprising of all, the fifth most popular jersey to frame is Larry Bird, who retired in 1992!
While framing jerseys for players such as Steph Curry and Rob Gronkowski are gaining in popularity, it's the "old guys" that remain most popular!
